CITIZENS UK BRISTOL

2014 - 2017
I initiated and acted as a lead organiser for Citizens UK Bristol in a voluntary capacity. As a community coalition made up of Bristol residents, migrant organisations, faith groups, schools and landlords, we successfully lobbied two mayors and partnered with Bristol City Council to co-design and deliver a Syrian refugee family resettlement programme, which continues to run.
During this time, I sat on Bristol City Council’s Refugee Resettlement Programme Board, Citizens UK's National Refugee Welcome Board and the New Citizens Leadership Team. Representing the wider work of Citizens UK, I received a Migrants Organise & UNHCR’s Champion of the Year, Women on the Move Award.
This work was part of a national Citizens UK Refugees Welcome campaign across 92 local authorities that, alongside the efforts of many civic actions, persuaded a Cameron-led government to change its resettlement quota from 750 to 20,000 in 2015.
